Almost entirely encased in glass, this stunning residence is perfectly suited to its magnificent setting. Killen Falls House sits on a secluded hill in the Northern NSW hinterland, near Byron Bay. Adjacent to plentiful rainforest, the site has spectacular views and the house was designed by the architect owners to take full advantage of these.
With the main axis of the house aligned to capture the energy and sound of the nearby waterfall, this stunning home exhibits Feng Shui principles of balance and harmony. The interior is built around an S-shaped spine which is extensively glazed. This glass corridor emulates the shape of the nearby creek and provides access to all rooms which are hung as boxes on each side. These spaces are designed to maximise cross ventilation and to take advantage of the amazing views.
A fully glazed bathroom, boasting a granite bathtub partially sunk into the floor, is a striking feature. From inside this room one can enjoy the surrounding rainforest. There is a separate self-contained flexible guest wing which could double as a business function centre.
The surrounding 5 acres incorporate extensive replanting of rainforest species compatible with the adjacent ‘Big Scrub’ rainforest environment. Framed by seamless glass paneling, the vast in-ground pool is very inviting. Killen Falls House was built with sustainability in mind, utilising low VOC finishes, solar panels and incorporating passive design principles. Rainwater provides 100% of the water and reed beds have been introduced as a waste management system.
